We’ve written about the kitchen being the heart of your home several times now, and hopefully you’re convinced. So with that said, you know it’s important that when you’re doing a kitchen renovation, that you’re doing it the right way, and adding the right finishes.
There are many out of the box kitchen cabinets that you can get from the big box stores, but they typically aren’t customized, don’t have as many options, and you’re not working with one contractor on the whole kitchen remodel project, which is important in having a cohesive design. Did you know that Paul Ferrara and Sons can work with you to layout and customize your kitchen? We work with several different great kitchen cabinet vendors, which you can read more about here.
Kitchen Cabinet Options
One basic thing to consider when deciding on kitchen cabinets is to look at your project as a whole. For example, what color is your flooring going to be? Have you picked out dark or light granite counter tops? A contrasting color can really make your kitchen pop and have an elegant polished feel. If you’re planning to do a light counter top, it makes sense to contrast that with dark stained kitchen cabinets.
You also have to decide what style cabinet doors and what kind of hardware you want. It all depends on the overall look and feel you’re going for so there is no right or wrong answer to this. That’s why they make a large variety of door styles and hardware, because each person may want something different in their home. One thing to look at in terms of quality construction of the cabinets and drawers you choose is to make sure that they use tongue and groove construction. If your drawers are stapled together, it’s much more likely that you will have problems with them down the line because they are a cheaper construction.
Some other nice things to think about when designing your kitchen cabinets are added features and types of cabinets to add. As for added features, you can get soft close doors and drawers, which is a nice upgrade at little cost. You might also want to consider sliding drawers inside cabinets. For example, if you have a pantry cabinet, adding sliding drawers instead of fixed drawers will make it easier for you to find the bag of flour hiding in the back of the shelf. As for types of cabinets, if you have the space, you might want to consider adding a spice cabinet, that’s specifically designed to hold spices; or how about a cabinet with an insert for sheet pans to stack easier. So beyond the look and feel style options, there are many practical utility options to choose from as well.
Soup to Nuts
When you’re doing a kitchen remodel, it’s important to cover everything from soup to nuts. Like it says above, you want to decide from the beginning what color floors, cabinets, and counter tops you want because they all add to the look and feel of the final design. Beyond the look and feel, make sure the utility of your cabinets also fit with your needs. Putting it all together into one cohesive project will make the final outcome gel together into a welcoming “heart of the home” kitchen.
